Canadian Thanksgiving

Image
Today is Canadian Thanksgiving.  A day I haven't given a lot of thought to since 1997 when we celebrated our last Thanksgiving in October and switched to celebrating during November with the rest of the U.S. But this year my parents and one of my sisters are in Canada and celebrating their first October Thanksgiving in 23 years and they're doing it without me. And I'll be having Thanksgiving here without them. It'll only be the second one where I haven't been with my family. The first one was a few years ago when I decided to stay in Texas and was lucky enough to have a good friend invite me to her family's. While I had a great time with them, everyone ate the cheesecake I brought because I make amazing cheesecake, I wished at the time that I went home. Mostly because the town that shall not be named had their own lame ass parade that they aired live that morning instead of airing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade which I still think should be illegal. I do

On Repeat

Ah quarantine. Nothing but free time. I can read new books and plays, keep trying to teach myself how to play the ukulele (my hands are just too small, it's not going to happen, but it's my dream so I won't give up!), and catch up on all the t.v. shows and movies everyone else is bingeing so we can have at least something to talk about.  I've done a lot of reading, a lot of exercising, not as much ukulele, and I've watched the entire Avenger's series from start to finish about 4 times. And the four Avenger's movies on their own countless times among a few other favorites (we're getting into the holiday season which means I'll be watching Hocus Pocus and You've Got Mail, to name a few, a lot a lot). I just don't want to watch anything else, anything new. But I don't necessarily want to watch those either. After a while it gets old and while the first time maybe first two times it was fun because I'd forgotten so much. It was like watch

Things I don't know how to do... but should...

Everyone's been finding lots of ways to fill their time in quarantine and so have I. I've read a lot, watched some movies and t.v., cooked a lot more, started a regular exercise routine, set up a cleaning schedule, but I haven't tried to learn anything new. I didn't make sourdough (although I did research how to and got some advice from a friend who was making it before it got cool), I didn't learn Spanish or any of the things that sometimes rattle around in the back of my mind as things I should know how to do.   So here's a brief list of things I still don't really know how to do... but maybe will learn to sometime...  1. How to start a fire without matches. Or how to start a fire with matches, if we're being real. I'm super scared of matches. So actually, I probably could start a very impressive fire with matches if I ever tried to light one. 2. How to lift my own weight. I can run (for a little bit) in six inch stilettos, but I have the uppe

A Year Apart

Everything you read about relationships always tells you the worst thing you can do is stay together when you'll be long distance. It's literally the biggest DON'T when you're trying to date. I always said I'd never do long distance because it sounded awful and hard and it never seems to work in the end. And then I meet Tim. And everything is perfect. OK not perfect, but it was amazing. I've never had this experience of being with someone who shared so many of my interests, made me feel like I was interesting and had important things to say and contribute. Tim made me feel special and beautiful, and we had a lot of fun together from the beginning. He was so sweet and concerned that I had fun, and I found him so fascinating. He would text me every morning and we would text all day and talk at night and never ran out of things to say. He completely swept me off my feet and I stopped second guessing myself and started to feel comfortable and at home. But life d

Summer is for Music!

I love summer and I love music and these are some of the songs that have been blasting from my car competing with the air conditioning for who will blow my ear drums out. What have you been listening to this summer? "Don't Take The Money" by Bleachers "Cleopatra" by The Lumineers "Bad Liar" by Selena Gomez "You Don't Know Me" by Jax Jones ft. Raye "Every Single Night" by Computer Games

Allergic to Confession

Allergies are in the air! Itchy eyes, itchy nose, itchy throat; basically, life sucks for everyone. Confession: I had a booger on my nose for who knows how long. I scratched my nose and could see my nose ring out of my peripheral vision. Except it was on the wrong side of my face. So I felt for it where the piercing actually is to make sure it hadn't fallen out or wasn't sitting at some bizarre angle and it was right where I left it. But I could still see it on the right side of my nose. And when I went to feel what it was, it was a booger. So that's awesome. Pass the tissues, we're all disgusting.

Confessions of a Thief

I'm pretty sure everyone knows I'm a klepto. But I just love to confess to it; I think maybe it'll absolve me of my responsibility for taking pens or post-its or the little stainless steel sauce cups they bring ketchup in at restaurants. Confession: When the batteries run low in my mouse at work, I just trade them out with the batteries in my coworkers mouse. Leaving theirs dead. Yes. I'm a monster. I know.
